PLAB 2 / UKMLA-CPSA:Complete Guide to OSCE Stations, Marking & Preparation

PLAB 2 is the clinical OSCE set by the General Medical Council (GMC), the second and final part of the PLAB assessment for international medical graduates (IMGs). It consists of 16 scored clinical stations plus rest stations, 8 minutes each, held only at the GMC's assessment centre in Manchester. Candidates are marked across three domains — data gathering, clinical management, and interpersonal skills — and must pass within 2 years of their PLAB 1 pass date.

What is PLAB 2?

PLAB 2 is the practical, clinical component of the GMC's PLAB assessment — an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that tests whether an international medical graduate can safely manage real clinical encounters, not just recall knowledge. It is sat only after passing PLAB 1, and only at the GMC's dedicated assessment centre in Manchester; unlike PLAB 1, it cannot be taken at any international venue.

Since its alignment with the MLA content map, PLAB 2 is delivered to the same clinical and professional skills standard as the UKMLA Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA) that UK medical graduates sit — the underlying competency bar is shared, even though IMGs continue to book an exam named PLAB 2.
